10 Used Middleweight Adventure Bikes Worth Buying In 2025

As the adventure bike segment continues to grow, we are getting more and more fantastic middleweight options to choose from. Unfortunately, the prices for these versatile machines only seem to be going up. So if you are on the hunt for a bargain, it might be time to consider a used option. Even though middleweight adventure bikes are incredibly popular at the moment, there are some models that are depreciating a little more than others. There are also a handful of older bikes that are still well worth a look. All these bikes offer impressive bang for the buck, and all of them weigh less than 500 pounds.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including KBB. Buying a used motorcycle always has an element of risk attached, so please do your research, and proceed with caution. The motorcycles on this list go from oldest to newest.

2004 BMW F 650 GS Dakar

It is interesting that what was once considered a middleweight ADV 20 years ago, looks decidedly “entry-level” by modern standards. The soon-to-be-released F 450 GS offers up a spec sheet that looks eerily similar to this old bike, just, with a lot more tech features and modern suspension bits. If you are willing to do without the features, this offers immense off-road potential and a Rotax single that is as proven as they come.

At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we have the least off-road competent middleweight on this list. Much like the aforementioned BMW, it just offers so much value. Where the BMW offers off-road potential, the V-Strom offers traveling range. Its V-twin is a peach and has proven to be a reliable performer over the years. There is also an extensive aftermarket for these bikes, and you can convert them into anything you want them to be, from sport tourer to off-road beast… sort of.

This was the final year that the 990 was produced, and it was very much the finished article. This pre-dates KTM’s tech drive and is significantly more analog than anything that followed it. Experienced riders will love that, but those unfamiliar with riding a pretty big bike in the dirt without modern safety nets might find that it can be a bit of a handful. When it was new, it was competing with full-size ADVs, but today it falls right in line with modern middleweight bikes.

2014 Husqvarna TR650 Terra

Price Range: $3,000 – $5,000

TR 650 Terra Husqvarna

This is effectively the aforementioned BMW reincarnated. The Terra was built in Italy – of all places – using those old BMW/Rotax parts by what was still a Swedish company, which, in turn, was in the process of being bought out by the Austrians. This Euro mashup somehow worked rather well, but KTM rather understandably didn’t want much to do with a product like this. It wasn’t priced or marketed particularly well, and was quietly killed off as the orange monster swallowed up the Husqvarna brand.

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R

Unlike the 990, this was actually marketed as a middleweight alternative. It was a stop-gap for KTM while the 790 platform was still in development, and to some, now represents something of a “holy grail” ADV. Unlike that ill-fated 790/890 platform, the LC8 has proven to be fantastically reliable over the years. In this tune, it is also relatively understressed and the bike is still lighter, and more capable, than many modern middleweight bikes.

This isn’t exactly an ADV, but it’s no less. We will readily admit that before this was released, we thought this was just another design exercise from the Scrambler range. Rather surprisingly, the Desert sled is anything but a pretender. While it boasts a gorgeous retro design, it is also genuinely off-road capable. At this price, it also represents something of a bargain.

Although more off-road capable ADVs get all the love, bikes like the more street-oriented Tiger 850 Sport are ultimately more practical for most riders. This will be significantly more comfortable on longer rides that require you to spend a good deal of time on the highway. When called upon, it is still more than capable of handling the odd fire road, just don’t expect it to do any single track.

To be fair, it is pretty hard to believe that the Tuareg 660 has already been out for this long. It is also hard to believe that a much-loved bike like this has depreciated this much already. So far, it has proven to be perfectly reliable – at least as reliable as any other middleweight ADV – and offers a long list of great features. Forget the Tenere or Transalp, a used Tuareg has to be one of the best middleweight buys right now.

Technically, this is a dual-sport, and not an adventure bike. But, in terms of use case, it is an adventure bike and comes with an underrated feature – a built-in community. Getting a KLR will mean embracing a slower pace, but it has proven to be mightily capable, reliable, and above all else, durable. Getting the Adventure model for around $5k is also something of a bargain.

One of Suzuki’s latest offerings is already 2-years-old, and is depreciating faster than any other Japanese ADV. By all accounts, this is a good bike, with a trusty parallel-twin, but with a weight figure that puts it near full-size bikes and a power figure closer to the more affordable middleweights it continues to get overlooked. It shouldn’t though. In the real world, this is just as good as the other middleweight bikes and well worth testing.
