In today’s safety-conscious world, some of the most beloved sedans, SUVs, and trucks from yesteryear wouldn’t stand a chance of getting past the rigorous safety tests that all road-going vehicles are subject to. That’s why we love them, they are edge-of-your-pants beauties. But if you are thinking sensibly and are looking for a car to ferry your family around, or you just value keeping everything on your body where it should be, today’s market has got you pretty conclusively covered.
As standard today, most vehicles come with a huge swathe of safety features and tech, effective crumple zones, and hardcore builds that are designed to keep you safe in and out of a crash. From luxury sedans to everyday budget models, a lot of models are deemed very safe for everyday use. Each year, though, the IIHS publishes a list of its ‘Top Safety Pick‘ and ‘Top Safety Pick+’ models, so we are taking a look at the highest safety-rated and safest cars in 2025, according to the IIHS, and have brought you information about what makes them so safe.
To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturers and other authoritative sources, including IIHS, NHTSA, Fueleconomy.gov, and JD Power. Models are listed from the lowest starting MSRP to the highest.

Boasting a low starting price of just shy of $22,000, you may not expect the new Kia K4 to be fully kitted out in any sense of the word, but it is. Very well kitted out. There are four trims to choose from: the LX, the EX, the GT-Line, and the GT-Line Turbo, with starting prices that top out at just over $28,000. So, anyway you look at it, it is a relatively affordable sedan.
What makes it even more affordable-seeming is the most powerful engine you can get it equipped with. The Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo features a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four that is good for 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Value-for-money-wise, that works out at around $147 per horsepower, so not bad at all for a modern car with everything you need for everyday driving.
The IIHS has rated the 2025 Kia K4 as a ‘Top Safety Pick+,’ and it is clear to see why when you look over the standard set of safety equipment and tech you get from the base LX trim. As standard, it comes equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Forward Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Smart Cruise Control, and Driver Attention Warning. As you go up into the more expensive trims, the list gets even more comprehensive, with Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, available Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control, available Highway Driving Assist, and Safe Exit Warning all included.
On top of that, all crashworthiness tests resulted in ratings of ‘Good’; crash avoidance and mitigation tests, which include headlight quality, front crash prevention (vehicle-to-vehicle), and front crash prevention (pedestrian), resulted in ratings of ‘Acceptable’ and ‘Good,’ and seat belt and child restraint ratings are ‘Acceptable.’

Elantra
While the nose end of the 2025 Hyundai Elantra is still up for debate, what isn’t is how conclusively safe Hyundai has built it. As standard, the new Elantra boasts a massive list of standard safety features that make the sub-$23,000 starting price very appealing for drivers with families. The standard safety feature list includes:
- Forward Collision Avoidance.
- Lane Keep Assist.
- Driver Attention Warning.
- Blind Spot Monitoring.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Avoidance Assist.
Not only do you get a very safe ride, but you also get a sedan that has been highly rated by its owners for pretty much every aspect. According to ratings on JD Power, the Elantra is rated 83 out of 100 overall, 86 out of 100 for reliability, and 87 out of 100 for driving experience. Plus, it is relatively roomy inside, with 42.3 inches of front legroom, 38 inches of rear legroom, and 14.2 cubic feet of storage space. But you do get 60/40 split rear folding seats as well.
There are five trims to choose from this year: the Elantra SE, the Elantra SEL Convenience, the Elantra SEL Sport, the Elantra N Line, and the Elantra Limited. All come equipped with a good array of useful gadgets as standard, with the base SE boasting an eight-inch touchscreen, a rearview camera, wireless phone connectivity, and LED headlights. If you opt for models SEL Convenience upward, you benefit from a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the cabin, and if you go for the top-trim Limited, you get a blind spot camera and parking assist.
There is also the Elantra N, an effective stand-alone juiced-up version that gives the VW Golf R a real run for its money. You get all the safety features and convenience of an Elantra, but you also get a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four good for 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque, a performance-tweaked chassis, sticky tires, adaptive suspension, a multi-link rear suspension, and a fancy Bose sound system. This Elantra will set you back just shy of $33,000, so it can be seen as relatively good value for money considering what you get with it.

Mazda 3 Sedan
This year’s Mazda 3 has also been voted as a ‘Top Safety Pick+’ model by the IIHS, and in typically Mazda fashion, it brings a lot of everyday usability, reliability, and decent fuel frugality to the party, too. According to Fueleconomy.gov, the most fuel-efficient ’25 Mazda 3 is the FWD base trim 2.5 S, which can achieve an estimated combined mpg rating of 31 mpg.

Even the more powerful, AWD-equipped turbo models are relatively fuel-frugal, with the worst estimated fuel return you will get being 26 combined mpg. So, still not bad considering the notable boost in power. The Mazda 3 is very well-equipped for its price point, both in terms of safety and non-safety features, with the base trim boasting an 8.8-inch center display running Mazda Connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights and taillights, and remote keyless entry.
The Select Sport adds a bit more athleticism courtesy of 18-inch alloys and leatherette seating; the Carbon Edition gives you a more premium feel thanks to leather-trimmed seats, wireless charging, and standard all-wheel drive, while the turbocharged trims boast a larger 10.25-inch display, an available Bose sound system, and, of course, the more potent powertrain.
Safety-wise, all Mazda 3 models will keep you in check. You get Mazda’s i-ACTIVESENSE suite, which includes standard features like Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart Brake Support, lane departure warning, Blind-Spot Monitoring, auto high beams, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and driver attention alert. Higher trims get a little in the shape of a 360-degree monitor, parking sensors, and Traffic Sign Recognition.

You are probably not surprised to see the Honda Civic on the list of the safest cars of 2025. In typical Honda fashion, the new Civic is reliable, with a Kelley Blue Book reliability rating of 4.2 out of 5; it is well-priced; it is useful for everyday use, with a reasonable trunk space of 14.8 cubic feet, and the hybrid flavor can muster up to 48 combined mpg.
The IIHS has rated the Civic sedan as a ‘Top Safety Pick+,’ while the NHTSA has also given it a 5 out of 5-star safety rating. This will be down to its crashworthiness test results, which were all scored as ‘Good,’ a rating of ‘Good’ for headlight quality, and scores of ‘Acceptable’ for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash safety.
As standard, you get the Honda Sensing safety suite, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and auto high beams. But that’s not where it ends; there are so many more safety features that aren’t part of the Honda Sensing system in the form of:
- Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure.
- Multiple Airbags.
- ABS.
- Stability Control w/ Traction Control.
- Electronic Brake Distribution.
- Brake Assist.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
- LATCH Anchors (Child Seats).
- Seat Belt Reminders.
This year’s lineup will give you a varied choice of engine options, from a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-four in the base trim and a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter two-motor hybrid mill to a 1.5-liter turbo-four good for 200 horsepower under the hood of the Civic Si, and a 315-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four sitting up front in the awesome Civic Type R.

Boasting a sleek redesign boasting a wide LED light bar, a coupe-inspired silhouette, and a sharp front end, the Hyundai Sonata lineup looks the part of a semi-performance-oriented sedan and packs a good amount of standard features that make the slightly higher starting price compared to the Civic seem worth it.
- 2025 Hyundai Sonata SE. MSRP: $26,990.
- 2025 Hyundai Sonata SEL. MSRP: $28,000.
- 2025 Hyundai Sonata SEL Convenience. MSRP: $31,050.

- 2025 Hyundai Sonata N Line. MSRP: $35,500.
- 2025 Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid. MSRP: $37,700.
In the cabin, you get a curved panoramic display that merges a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital cluster; comfort comes in the form of available heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and ambient lighting; if you go for a higher trim like the Limited Hybrid or SEL Convenience, you get an optional panoramic sunroof.
There are three engine options for this year’s lineup: a 2.5-liter inline-four, good for 191 horsepower, under the hood of the SE, SEL, and SEL Convenience; a 192-horsepower 2.0-liter hybrid inline-four under the hood of the ‘Hybrid’ trims; and a 2.5-liter turbo-four that can kick out 290 horsepower under the hood of the Sonata N Line.
If you are looking for safety and a bit of kick to your everyday drive, there are worse sedans to consider than the N Line. Alongside the potent turbo-four, you get sport-tuned suspension, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, 19-inch alloys, quad exhaust outlets, and sporty bolstered seats.
As for the N Line, it stands as one of the last remaining affordable “hot” sedans on the market, sharing that title with its corporate sibling, the K5 GT.
– Car Buzz Test Drive Review by Jared Rosenholtz
So, you get sporty, sleek-looking fun combined with a ‘Top Safety Pick+’ rating from the IIHS and oodles of safety toys in the shape of the Hyundai SmartSense safety suite. This includes Forward Collision Avoidance, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Detection, and Rear Occupant Alert.

Accord
Taking another swing at the affordable sedan market, the Honda Accord continues to deliver what we love about it; namely, its solid reliability record, everyday ease of use, and decent features from the get-go. The Base LX trim has a starting price of just north of $28,000 and comes equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo-four that pushes out 192 horsepower, a 10.2-inch Driver Information Interface, and the Honda Sensing safety suite.
The next trim up, the SE, boosts things in a more comfortable direction with additions such as a one-touch power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats, all at a reasonable starting price of $30,560. If you want slightly better fuel economy, the Sport Hybrid grade boasts a 204-horsepower inline-four, and the EX-L Hybrid gets the same engine, but gets you leather-trimmed seating, parking sensors, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.
This year’s top two trims are the Accord Sport-L Hybrid and the Touring Hybrid, with starting prices of $34,940 and $37,390, respectively. They both share a 204-horsepower hybrid inline-four that can achieve an estimated combined mpg rating between 44 and 48 mpg. The Sport L Hybrid receives some more athletic additions, such as leather-trimmed seats, 19-inch alloys, and a gloss-black decklid spoiler, but it is the Touring Hybrid that offers the most in the way of comfort, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Google built-in, and a wireless phone charger.
What stays the same across the trims is Honda’s dedication to safety features, and all models are fully kitted out with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist, Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM), and Low-Speed Follow.

Attributes like safety, usability, and reliability are synonymous with Toyota, and once again, the Toyota Prius has been rolled out in the same kind of fashion. There is a choice of two hybrid engines this year: a 2.0-liter inline-four hybrid (196 horsepower) that is mated to either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and a 220-horsepower 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid inline-four that can achieve a very wallet-friendly estimated combined mpg rating of up to 53 mpg.
There are five main trims of the hybrid Prius: the LE, the XLE, the Nightshade Edition, the Limited, and the Limited AWD. The LE is the entry-level model and comes equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen and fabric-trimmed seats, and the XLE gets you SofTex-trimmed seats and a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
The Nightshade Edition is the sportiest iteration with unique touches and 19-inch wheels, and both the Limited trims are the plushest, with a glass roof and a JBL Premium Audio rig included. There are only three trims of the Prius PHEV (the SE, the XSE, and the XSE Premium), and you do benefit from the more powerful engine and better fuel economy, though prices for the 2025 Prius PHEV start at just shy of $35,000 instead of the relatively affordable $28,350 starting price of the Prius.
Every model of this year’s roll-out is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, which is very conclusive in what it offers, with Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Tracing Assist, and Road Sign Assist all included. Impressive fuel economy and lots of safety features; there isn’t much more to look for in a family-friendly car.

Boasting a 5-star NHTSA crash test rating, an IIHS ‘Top Safety Pick+’ rating, and a single hybrid engine option that can achieve an estimated combined mpg rating of 51 mpg (53 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway), the Camry looks to be taking on its Prius sibling in some way. The featured 2.5-liter inline-four paired with the fifth-gen Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5) can push out 225 horsepower combined in front-wheel drive models and a slightly higher 232 horsepower in all-wheel drive models.
Available as the LE, the SE, the XLE, and the XSE, you get a lot for your money in the shape of a nine-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Qi-compatible wireless charging pad. If you opt for one of the higher trims (the XLE or the XSE), you can also opt to add features like a JBL Premium Audio setup, leather-trimmed seats, and a 12.3-inch digital display cluster.
All models boast the ACE body design and well-rounded airbag system, and come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes auto high beams, Lane Departure Alert, Road Sign Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Like we usually find with a lot of Toyota models, they are a jack of all trades, and the new Camry is no exception.

Built with safety at the core of everything, the Acura Integra is well-designed for both all-around safety and, if you go for the Type S, a lot of driving fun. The Integra boasts the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure that is designed to disperse crash forces across the front of the car. This aims to reduce the impact on anyone inside, and with its reinforced frame paired with a comprehensive airbag system (front, side, knee, and curtain), the protection level inside is highly rated.

Beyond the structural safety, the Integra comes standard with AcuraWatch, a suite of advanced tech with features like Collision Mitigation Braking, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keep Assist. The IIHS hasn’t given the Integra a ‘Top Safety Pick+,’ like they have with the rest of the models on the list, but it still receives a ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating for 2025 models.
There is a trim for most budgets for people looking for a sporty compact sedan with a bit of style and some luxe additions. The base Integra comes equipped with a 200-horsepower VTEC Turbo mill, a nine-inch touchscreen, and the full AcuraWatch setup, while the A-Spec trim kicks off the sportier breed with 18-inch Shark Gray wheels, a rear spoiler, LED fog lights, and synthetic suede-trimmed seats. If you go one step up with the A-Spec with Technology Package, you also benefit from a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless phone charging, and the ELS STUDIO 3D rig.
Acura’s ELS audio system remains one of the most underrated audible experiences in the auto industry, while the Integra’s leather-surfaced sports seats don’t hug your love handles as aggressively as the Honda’s racing buckets.
– William Clavey, TopSpeed journalist
At the top, though, is the Integra Type S, one of the sportiest compact sedans on sale today. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter VTEC turbocharged inline-four that shifts out 320 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm. You get all the safety features plus a six-speed manual box, a high-revving mill, a limited-slip diff, and adaptive dampers. It is everyday driving blended with track-ready fun.
