Adventure bikes are the most versatile motorcycles money can buy. There is an adventure bike model for just about every purse and purpose, from rugged little singles ready to take on the trail, all the way up to luxurious V4s that are equally at home on a track. It is little wonder that this segment has exploded.
So, if you and your significant other are in the market for a bike that is suitable for long distance travel, it already makes sense to consider an ADV of some sort. But, if you also want to occasionally get out on your own and do some serious off-roading, you need to consider one of the bikes on this list. Purely for the sake of variety, we limited it to one bike pre brand.
To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from authoritative sources, such as Yamaha Motorsports, MV Agusta, and Ducati. The motorcycles on this list are rated according to MSRP.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure R
MSRP: $20,999
For those with a bigger budget, this might be the ideal choice. A bigger bike like this will always be a little more comfortable, not to mention powerful, but out of all the full-sized ADVs on the market, this is the only one we feel is genuinely capable off-road. The 1290 Super Adventure R offers an extraordinary balance of touring and off-road capability thanks to its relative light weight, and sophisticated off-road electronics.

Ducati DesertX Discovery
MSRP: $19,995
Just like the aforementioned KTM, the DesertX blurs the line between middleweight and full-size. Just with the DesertX Discovery, you get a genuine middleweight reaching up towards the higher class in terms of performance and specification. Comfort is certainly not an issue here and even though Ducati throws all sorts of nice-to-have features at the bike, it remains relatively light.

Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro
MSRP: $17,395
The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is certainly not the lightest of middleweights, but it more than makes up for any perceived lack in that department with a host of great comfort features. Its triple also adds an element of fun to the package, but it could also prove to become something of a negative, too. No triple is perfectly balanced, so there will be some vibrations in the higher revs which some riders find mildly annoying, and others simply can’t stand.

MV Agusta Enduro Veloce
MSRP: $15,998
This year, MV Agusta has reduced the price of the Enduro Veloce to just under $16k, and we have to admit we are staggered. This is a genuinely feature-rich motorcycle which honors its old price tag, and comes with a 5-year unlimited miles warranty. Build quality is right up there with the very best, while performance is also right on par with the other premium middleweight offerings from Europe. It is also a triple, though, so a test ride will be the deciding factor.

BMW F 900 GS
MSRP: $13,495
Several fans of the brand may balk at the exclusion of the famous R 1300 GS, but we feel that this is just going to be so much better suited for solo off-road exploration. After the previous-generation bike was criticized for being underpowered and overweight, BMW responded by adding a little power and shaving a little weight. While it certainly isn’t class-leading in either department, it is right on par and sufficiently differentiates itself with excellent build quality and an impressive list of standard features.

Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Adventure
MSRP: $13,159
So much is always expected of Japanese brands. No matter how reliable each bike they manufacture is, customers always expect more value. The V-Strom 800DE was not met with universal praise in this department, as it is simply a good bike for a fair price. For the money, we feel the Adventure trim is the best pick, offering a long list of standard features buyers would usually turn to the aftermarket for – including hard case – and end up spending more money.

Aprilia Tuareg 660
MSRP: $12,499
Out of all the versatile middleweight options, this might be the most versatile bike. It is currently the lightest bike in the middleweight class, yet still comes with all the features modern riders will be familiar with aside from anything related to an IMU. It is also powerful, and comfortable enough to ride pretty far, and can even be used as a commuter during the week if necessary.

Yamaha Tenere 700
MSRP: $10,999
One rather big caveat here would be the fact that the Tenere is not the most comfortable tourer. It shines so much off-road that we feel its inclusion is merited, and the CP2 engine also offers unerring reliability, which is a big factor when riding far from home. The latest version also offers more tech features than previous models and the soft rear suspension has also been addressed.

Honda Transalp
MSRP: $9,999
Honda were slow to get the Transalp out, relying on the old CB500X to plug the middleweight hole for quite some time. Once it did arrive, it was also met with a largely lukewarm response as customers felt that it didn’t really stack up to the Tenere off-road… because, it doesn’t, it is a different kind of ADV. This is a bike which is just as comfortable as the bigger Africa Twin, and more than capable of handling cross-country trips. Once you want to go off on your own, it is still plenty capable off-road.

Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure ABS
MSRP: $8,099
With the KLR650 Adventure, you get what is still essentially a heavily modified dual-sport. While this means it is pretty impressive off-road, it is not the most comfortable tourer in the world. But, it will do everything the other bikes will do, just cheaper, a lot cheaper. It comes with everything you will even need as standard fitment, so you don’t expressly need to add anything, and with it being a single, it is also cheap to run.
