This Modern Pebble Beach Home Takes Design Inspo From Butterflies

When a CEO and his wife envisioned their Pebble Beach home, they came to it with the idea of a butterfly. The couple planned to use the property as a family retreat until their daughters left for college, at which point it would become their primary residence. Working with the firm S-Squared, they created a clean, geometric structure that mimics the form of a butterfly: Two wings branch from the entrance, one facing the forest and the other situated toward the ocean.

Walking through the glass front doors into the 5,657-square-foot space, you’re deposited into a light-wood entryway where built-ins provide sleek, hidden storage. To one side is the great room, where sculptural lighting from the likes of Christopher Boots and Kelly Wearstler hangs from the sloped ceiling. A striking Pietra Fina marble fireplace anchors the living room, while a chic bar with a textured gray backsplash sits next to the dining table. The kitchen, meanwhile, is a study in contrasts: Pale wood frames the range, but the other cabinets are a much deeper hue.

Upstairs, the second-floor den was designed as a cozy space for family game nights or morning coffee. Geometric wallpaper and a banquette wrap around the corner room, which includes several small seating areas and a fireplace for extra warmth. Additional indoor amenities include a home office for remote work and a gym for fitting in a few reps.

The couple’s primary suite sports custom millwork, tactile fabrics, and the same marble finishes found throughout. The primary bathroom is particularly stunning, with a black-and-white patterned floor and a vanity that looks out over the foggy Northern California landscape. In total, there are five bedrooms and five bathrooms, including a powder room with textured mint-green walls.

Outside, the living areas are furnished with Brown Jordan pieces that have been adapted for year-round use. Marine-grade vinyl upholstery means the couple can curl up on the patios immediately after the coastal weather clears out. And when viewed from a distance, the butterfly motif is more than just a design inspiration: The three roofs that top the different wings are butterflies themselves, dipping down toward the middle, about to take flight into the Pebble Beach sky.
