Hands-On: Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin – The Vintage-Inspired Release That No One Expected

Nothing here is particularly revolutionary, but it doesn’t have to be to be good. Vacheron Constantin has brought back what is essentially the same perpetual calendar movement (the 1120 QP) that has powered many of the brand’s perpetual calendars for over 41 years, since 1984 (which now makes me feel extremely old, as I almost wrote “31 years”). That’s a long time. Even crazier, the base caliber architecture for these movements, the JLC 920, was announced in 1967 as the thinnest automatic caliber at the time. We’ve covered the JLC 920-based QP movements extensively in the past (including AP’s 2120/2800), so I won’t go into them further.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, Vacheron went back to its roots in sizing, making a new 36.5mm by 8.43mm, in a modern era when most brands are putting out QPs that are much larger. Instead of a reissue of the old ref. 43031 watches, the brand stuck with the Traditionnelle case shape with wider, slightly straight lugs and a flat bezel.
