Years Later, People Still Love The “Silly” Honda Insight

There is nothing more random than the Honda Insight, and more specifically, the first-gen edition. We came across a Reddit thread from a driver who loves his “silly 65mpg car,” and with fuel economy THAT good, we’re right there with them. Many older cars outperform new ones, and Honda’s early-day hybrid tech is a prime example of this. The 1999-2006 Insight, although it may look clunky, is one that people rely on for great gas mileage when they need it. Now considered an icon, the original Insight made its mark not only physically with its one-of-a-kind design, but also with its 1.0-liter inline-three engine paired with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, which has lasted 300,000 to 500,000 miles with minimal problems for countless owners. Ah, the good old days.

Don’t Sleep On The First-Generation Honda Insight

Because of this recent Reddit post and thread, it is worth it to reminisce about how goated the original Insight from Honda actually was/is. Thanks to this real-life experience, we’re seeing the OG Insight achieve upwards of 65 miles per gallon when on the road. Per the Redditor, he has “been road tripping the JDM Insight, surprisingly pretty comfortable for long drives. best mpg we’ve achieved was 71mpg on a 120-mile drive, but it usually averages 60-65mpg for longer trips.”

Now, I can’t argue with that level of fuel efficiency, and the JDM versions of this hatchback are known for being even better than the non-JDM ones. It’s also worth noting that this user’s Insight has a five-speed manual transmission. He also mentions that the best fuel economy comes with slightly better driving than he might prefer, but it’s worth it for the gas savings. Speed lightning no more…

As someone who’s a firm believer in going back to the basics, the first-generation Insight, like the one being applauded in this Reddit thread for achieving over 65 miles per gallon during road trips, is the way it is because of ingenious engineering. In case you forgot, the 1999-2006 Honda Insight pushed out significant savings that came from its single-minded, minimalist approach to efficiency.

Rather than using a complex hybrid system to deliver performance, its “Integrated Motor Assist” (IMA) system utilizes a small electric motor to enhance an already efficient, lightweight gasoline engine, creating an intimate connection between the car and the driver’s actions.

TLDR: The original Honda Insight’s 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine was a high-tech engine for its time, featuring a very lean-burn operation and VTEC-E valve timing to maximize fuel efficiency.

Honda this, Honda that. The 1st-generation Insight is a beast, even if it doesn’t appear that way, for endless reasons. On Reddit and the open road, this mild hybrid is a joy to drive and own, even all these years later. Let this serve as a reminder that Honda is one of the first successful producers of hybrid cars.

Fun fact: Launched in 1999, the original Insight was the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. for many years. It was initially rated at up to 70 mpg on the highway.
