Genesis’s Upcoming Magma GT Supercar May Get Cabrio and GT3 Variants

Genesis’s vision for its first supercar may be even more ambitious than initially anticipated.

The luxury marque isn’t content to release just one version of the upcoming Magma GT, according to Autocar. Instead, it sounds like several variants of the powerful two-door, including a cabriolet and street-legal track beast, could follow.

The British publication’s report isn’t just based on wishful thinking about the road-going version of the company’s future GT3 race car. It is based on the words of automaker’s chief creative officer, Luc Donckerwolke, who revealed that production of the Magma GT is likely to exceed the 250 examples required by racing homologation rules. The model will be exclusive, but variants that will push the total number well above that figure will be released.

“We will add S, GTS, roadster, lightweight, club sport, a GT3 road car, a GT3 R for track use,” the executive, who was previously the design director at Bentley and Lamborghini, told Autocar. “It’s a complete life cycle of products to offer different possibilities to customers that will combine performance and luxury inside.”

Some will detect similarities between this strategy and how Porsche has handled its most iconic model, the 911. The German marque has released different versions of the sports car for practically every kind of driver over the past seven decades, whether they were looking for something to dominate their local track (911 GT3 R rennsport) or take off-road (the 911 Dakar). But Genesis and parent company Hyundai are aware that they can’t just follow this formula and expect the same results.

“We cannot go up against such an icon,” Manfred Harrer, the chief technology officer at Hyundai, told the weekly magazine. “We have to find our own way.”

All this talk should make people even more excited about the Magma GT, which will be the flagship of Genesis’s new high-performance Magma sub-brand. Little else is known about the car right now, aside from the fact that it will feature aggressive styling and likely be powered by an internal-combustion V-8 that can make upwards of 670 hp. The automaker’s executive team seems happy to keep talking about a car it unveiled in concept form just last month, so don’t be surprised if more details begin to filter out in the not-so-distant future.
