Mangusta GranSport 38 Yacht Takes Asymmetry to 2 Levels

A fourth model has joined Mangusta Yachts’ fast-displacement megayacht lineup. Not simply another size from which to choose, the Mangusta GranSport 38 yacht broadens and re-arranges space, quite literally.

Mangusta Yachts, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, wanted to increase usable space inside. Especially important in this size range—the model is 123 feet/37.6 meters—owners and guests increasingly expect fewer barriers to the surrounding seascapes. Yet, preserving the character of the Mangusta GranSport series was crucial, in profile and performance. It took care of the first priority by creating an asymmetrical design. Although other builders offer asymmetrical semi-custom yachts, they eliminate one of the side decks. Aboard the Mangusta GranSport 38 yacht, a side deck on both the main and upper decks is gone.  Specifically, the starboard side of the main deck is full beam, with a wall of glass, preserving the port side deck. On the upper deck, meanwhile, it’s the opposite. Stairs still connect the levels, though, including floating stairs leading from the aft upper deck to the topmost sundeck.

More seamless indoor-outdoor living occurs on the main deck, too. Most superyachts in this size range have sliding-glass doors between the saloon and aft deck. However, the aft deck is much like a cockpit, removed from the swim platform and beach club. Instead, the Mangusta GranSport 38 yacht unfolds aft over two levels, with just stairs between them. The level even with the saloon has two big C-shaped settees and a bar. The lower level has cozy settees tucked against the yacht, inviting guests to sit and enjoy the sunset. (On a related practical note, the shipyard has integrated stowage within the lounges.) Making the experience feel more like floating directly above the water, the adjacent bulkheads fold down. When guests want to take a dip, a transformer section of the swim platform opens to make it easier to access the water.

Since skylounges can be underutilized, the upper-deck asymmetry may convince customers to enjoy the space some more. Further to that point, glass wraps around the full aft portion of the deck. This invites more indoor-outdoor experiences, too, from alfresco dining to interior movies and more.

Speaking of interiors, owners still have the freedom to tailor the look and feel of spaces. Mangusta has partnered with Alberto Mancini Yacht Design so that everything from the main-deck master suite to the four guest staterooms below reflect the way customers like to live.

Finally, while the fast-displacement hull design makes the Mangusta GranSport superyacht series more efficient throughout the speed range, the Mangusta GranSport 38 yacht introduces a different propulsion system. For the first time, the brand is using Volvo Penta’s IPS. Top speed at half load should be a swift 20 knots, benefitting from the engines’ proven lower emissions, better fuel consumption, and reduced vibration. The podded propulsion requires less engine-room space as well, further adding to the space advantages of the new series.
