One-Off Supercar Masterpieces: Rare Automotive Art

Even to the casual observer, the exclusive nature of supercars is abundantly clear. If it weren’t that way, we’d see a Ferrari 458 on every street. Perhaps if there were a 458 on every street, its desirability would not be so high, but that’s another conversation. This kind of engineering doesn’t come cheap, which makes the price climb as high as many houses. In turn, these cars reside in a niche market, inhabited by CEOs, investors, lottery winners, celebrities, and well-off families.

Some are exceptionally rare. For example, the Ferrari Enzo, produced in about 400 examples. This is far less than the 458’s run of more than 13,000. Ferrari’s 250 GTO was built in even less than the Enzo — about 36. Now, the models below fall into a different category: they’re unique. These cars were designed and, in most cases, built only once. That makes them true automotive unicorns, so let’s take a look.

To provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from the various manufacturers of the cars in question. Some specifications may not be readily available due to the nature of these models. The years provided below are the commonly accepted times that the following models debuted for the first time.

Bugatti is known today for its modern hypercars, which began with the Veyron. However, the brand has a rich history that extends back to 1909. The Type 51, on which this one-off coachbuilt coupe is based, was a formidable racer in the early 1930s. The unique Dubos Coupe was built by Paris-based Louis Dubos in 1936, commissioned by a client, and based on the Type 51 Grand Prix chassis.

It’s the 30s equivalent of a Bugatti Veyron. Unlike the bare-bones, open-wheel 1930s racer on which it’s based, the coupe features gorgeous, sleek body metal draped over its wheels, with the rear completely covered and the new closed glasshouse and roof finished with a dramatic rear fin. Running the show was ostensibly a version of the supercharged inline-eight that powered the Type 51, which made up to 185 horsepower. Not bad for the 30s.

Pebble Beach must have been in awe when Pininfarina’s latest stunning piece of design was shown off, commissioned for famous client James Glickenhaus. Officially known as the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina, it’s based on the Ferrari Enzo (2002-2004), which was bought and sacrificed for the project. The public got to see it at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance, where its retro styling evoked past Ferrari racing cars from the 60s.

Its design was intended to follow that of racing variants like the Ferrari 330 P from the 60s. It differs from the Enzo with its simple aerodynamic and rounded front end (dramatically different from the Enzo’s pointed nose), and the rear end, which features an exposed grille section with rounded taillights, another hint to the P4/5’s racing car inspiration.

McLaren

The British brand McLaren relaunched in 2012 with the MP4-12C, its first all-new model since the iconic McLaren F1 that finished production in 1998. Unlike the F1, the 12C utilized a twin-turbo V8 and had a dual-clutch transmission. It would go on to spawn the next generation of McLarens that continue to this day, but it would also spawn this, the quirky X-1.

Shown off at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it stunned with its closed-wheel design and swooping bodywork, inspired by classic automotive designs of the past. Underneath, it was still a 12C, and it was fully road-legal, with extensive testing done to ensure the X-1 met the same standards as the car on which it was based. For those who wish to stand out as well as go fast, the X-1 is hard to beat. Too bad the brand didn’t bring it to fruition, as we love its brave originality.

Revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event in Lake Como, Italy, in 2017, the Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a one-off machine commissioned by a wealthy client. It was based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe that was built until 2016, with the same running gear, but a reimagined design that’s inspired by classic coachbuilt cars as well as yacht design.

At the front, the Sweptail’s roots are clearer, but it’s the new glasshouse that culminates in a pointed rear with a curved tail end that earns the car its name. Performance specs aren’t the focus here, and even with 450 horsepower, the 6,000-pound automotive equivalent of Haute Couture is all about opulence, luxury, and effortless progress rather than supercar speed.

The Lamborghini Aventador, on which this SC18 is based, has its fair share of variants and limited edition versions. The SC18 isn’t just another Aventador special edition, and stands out for being a unique one-off by the motorsports division Squadra Corse, which fuses racecar engineering with road-legal status.

It was designed and built for a wealthy client, with some of the running gear of the Aventador SVJ, as well as the 6.5-liter V12. A major highlight here is its aerodynamic package, which includes an adjustable carbon fiber rear wing and other exterior details inspired by the Huracan GT3 Evo and Super Trofeo EVO. This model was built to be primarily a track car that was also approved for road use. Underneath, it’s still largely an Aventador, but the bespoke aero package makes it alluring for those who find the standard model a little boring.

Ferrari’s One-Off program designs and builds unique and bespoke cars for special customers, and this is a special car. Given the name ‘Deborah’, the SP38 is built on the running gear of the 488 GTB, which was produced up until 2021. It uses the same twin-turbo V8 as the GTB and features design elements that were inspired by the iconic F40, as well as past models such as the 308 GTB.

The lights on the front are as thin as possible, and the SP38 hides its roots under unique new sheet metal. It was revealed at Fiorano and was, according to Ferrari, immediately put through a series of hot laps to prove its ability as a track weapon as well as a grand tourer. Rear visibility is presumably not its strongest quality, but we love the rear louvers.

Bugatti La Voiture Noire

The 2019 Geneva Motor Show was the debut of this, the most expensive new car ever, with a cost of nearly $19 million. It is also ultra-rare, since it was built in one example for one lucky client. Bugatti built ‘The Black Car’ on the excellent foundations of the Chiron, with which it shares most of its running gear and components.

Its styling is true to the name, completely black, and inspired by the iconic Type 57 SC Atlantic, which extends to the trim that runs through the center of the car from front to back — a direct homage to the Atlantic’s dorsal fin. Since the Chiron was priced at around $3 million, the standard model looks like a steal, especially as it has largely the exact same powertrain and performance potential. Even so, there’s literally nothing in the world like La Voiture Noire, and if we were to have any Bugatti, it might as well be an all-black bespoke one.

Another automotive solitaire, and this one was also built on the Chiron’s platform. Bugatti’s Profilee, a unique model, was celebrated as the final variant in the Chiron range and was billed as the last Bugatti available with the iconic W16 engine. Specifically, the Profilee was based on the track-focused Chiron Pur Sport. The mission of the Profilee was to take the extreme nature of the Pur Sport’s design but create something less radical and more refined, with a big giveaway being the smaller fixed wing at the back.

Despite its ostensible focus on refinement and elegance, the Pofilee received a larger air dam and grille at the front for enhanced cooling. In addition, it has a higher top speed than the Pur Sport it is based on – 236 mph compared to 217 mph. An interesting machine that’s faster than the hardcore Pur Sport, more elegant at the rear, and only built in one example that was later auctioned off to one lucky bidder.

Designed in collaboration with the late Virgil Abloh — renowned fashion designer and entrepreneur — this one-off design concept was revealed in 2021 at Miami’s Rubell Museum, after the passing of Abloh. Differentiated by its combination of off-road-centric design and opulence, it combined various industrial and rugged elements with a high level of detail and touches of luxury.

On the outside, the all-terrain tires, external roll cage, auxiliary lighting, and perforated aluminum make it look like a Dakar car. Inside, the cabin is fitted with a luxurious suite of materials and exotic design. Mercedes-Benz intended this to be a one-off electric show vehicle, an interesting hybrid of ultra-premium brand Maybach’s values with an off-road focus. No detailed specs were revealed, but the machine would likely have been powered by multiple electric motors for all-wheel drive.

The final model on our list is the unique Pagani Huayra Epitome, unveiled by the Pagani Grandi Complicazioni division in 2024. It was the special request of another wealthy client. For those at the back, Pagani is an Italian hypercar brand that rose to fame for its first model, the Zonda, following its debut in 1999. Following the Zonda was the Huayra, powered by a twin-turbo Mercedes-AMG V12 for most versions.

It has since been taken over by the Utopia, which offers a manual transmission. One thing the Huayra didn’t offer was a manual stick, only a sequential manual for special track variants. The Epitome adds a traditional seven-speed manual transmission to the Huayra’s potent recipe for the first time, along with various other upgrades and design features, such as the large, integrated rear wing. A truly unique experience just for the fact that this car lets you row the gears of a twin-turbo V12 with three pedals.
