Yacht owners have wide-ranging tastes. Not surprisingly, some aren’t satisfied with the neutral tones and textures dominating superyacht design. To showcase fundamentally different possibilities for the Ocean King Explorer 34M yacht interior, Ocean King tapped BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Design. Suiting her function-drives-form philosophy, the design is boldly geometric, skipping fashionable trends driven by pure aesthetics.

The Explorer series, revealed in October, leaves no doubt from first glance that she prioritizes covering long distances. Hydro Tec has given the 111-footer (34-meter) suitably shippy looks, especially with her high, squared-off bow being reminiscent of tugboats. The naval-architecture firm’s engineering also should permit a leisurely top speed of 13 knots. The yacht further should be able to put 4,000 nautical miles under her steel hull at 10 knots.

According to Ocean King, a “coherent spatial narrative” was crucial to set the megayacht apart from its Doge series, while remaining true to her purpose. Followers of design movements may recognize elements of New Brutalism. Briefly, New Brutalism features simpler yet still-impressive structures and layouts, with strong lines, geometric shapes, and colors. Additionally, materials like cement are popular and left as is, not covered up, to showcase their natural qualities. For the Ocean King Explorer 34M yacht interior, BurdissoCapponi makes repeated use of square grids in the layout and décor, along with metal mesh, tubular lighting fixtures, cement, and deep colors.

For instance, perforated metal headboards are in each of the staterooms. Vertical mesh panels replace traditionally solid sideboards, walls, and doors of wood or lacquer. The idea is to provide separation without literally walling areas off. Other walls, noticeably in the master stateroom, have cement finishes, as do ceilings. These same walls and ceilings have equally striking grid patterns. Lighting design, meanwhile, combines both exposed circular patterns overhead and equally exposed bulbs in wall columns. In other areas, though, lighting is within the grids, for accentuating architectural designs.

Softness and even fluidity flows throughout the Ocean King Explorer 34M yacht interior, of course. Circular settees, rounded tables and chairs, and the already-mentioned circular lighting do the trick. Similarly, and touching upon both New Brutalism and superyacht luxury, well-defined moods come via a choice of tones. Rich burgundy characterizes one, while deep greens dominate the other.

Overall, Ocean King believes BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Design has succeeded in establishing a more “authentic explorer spirit.” It’s industrial-meets-luxury, and strong-meets-soft. Construction on the megayacht, run with a captain and four-person crew, can start on contract.
