This Triumph Is The Coolest Entry-Level Motorcycle That Promises To Turn Heads On A Budget

Up until last year, if you were to think of capable entry-level bikes today, Triumph certainly wouldn’t pop into your mind. That has now changed, thanks to the brand’s new range of 400cc motorcycles. This comprises the Speed 400, Scrambler 400, and Scrambler 400XC as of now, all of which enjoy a strong position in the market.

Given the success, it’s only fair Triumph expands the lineup further. That’s exactly what is happening, as we have two new entry-level motorcycles from the brand in the US now. One of these is a cafe racer, unlike anything else, while the other is a ‘tracker’. Let’s dive in.

The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, and more recently the Scrambler XC, have been a global hit, winning multiple awards and driving record sales. These bikes have brought more younger riders and more women into the Triumph family than ever before, proving the appeal of a premium brand in this market. This success reflects Triumph’s unique position in the segment, blending high-quality finishing, modern performance, and beautiful retro styling. Now, with the Tracker 400 and Thruxton 400, we’re building on that momentum with two brand-new models that give customers even more choice.

The Triumph Thruxton 400 Has A Gorgeous Neo-Retro Design

The Thruxton name is borderline sacred in the motorcycle world. So Triumph had a tall order to justify it with its new cafe racer. Luckily, the baby bike doesn’t disappoint. At the front is a sporty semi-fairing with a circular LED headlight. This takes inspiration from the now-discontinued Speed Triple 1200 RR, courtesy of its curvy shape and swept-back windscreen.

Towards the rear, you get a pillion seat cowl and new under-seat panels. This is topped with intrinsic details like a brushed aluminum fuel cap and a new LED tail lamp to create a likable design. Having seen this in person, we can confirm it is a proper head-turner.

The Triumph Tracker 400 Also Boasts An Appealing Design

As for the Tracker, it distinguishes itself by taking inspiration from flat-track bikes. While the front end reminds us of the Speed 400, a closer look reveals several special design touches. This comprises a seat cowl, number board, boxy fuel tank, fly screen, and newly styled wheels. The Pirelli MT60 tires add further oomph to the package, and so does the Scrambler 400-like dual-tip exhaust.

Likable Electronic Features Add To The Modern-Day Charm Of The Thruxton And Tracker 400

Features have become an integral part of entry-level bikes, and Triumph has ensured you get all the basics here. It’s a package similar to the Speed 400, complete with the same semi-digital instrument cluster. The list of standard inclusions comprises:

  • Traction control
  • Dual-channel ABS
  • Slipper clutch
  • Ride-by-wire
  • All-LED lights
  • USB port
  • Bar-end mirrors (Thruxton 400)

The Thruxton 400 And Tracker 400 Feature Triumph’s New Single-Cylinder Engine

From afar, these two bikes might seem like a design exercise. But the engine tells you that they are not. Unlike the Speed and Scrambler, you get a different state of tune on the Thruxton and Tracker. So the 398cc, single-cylinder engine produces 41 horsepower here, two ponies up from the other two. Torque stands at 27.7 pound-feet, meanwhile.

How has this been achieved, you ask? Well, Triumph keeps things a bit vague by claiming “a combination of new mechanical parts, including a revised camshaft profile, along with a new engine tune”. Nevertheless, all the power continues to reach the wheel via a six-speed transmission, equipped with a slipper clutch.

Triumph Has Reworked The Ergonomics On The Thruxton And Tracker 400

Looking like a cafe racer is half the battle won. The other half comes from the ergonomics. So the British bikermaker has ditched the tubular straight bars from the Speed 400, putting in new clip-on-type bars. These not only look cool, but also join hands with repositioned footpegs to ensure a properly sporty riding triangle. The new split seat adds to the package, too.

As for the Tracker, Triumph claims “upright and elbows out” was the brief. There are wider handlebars, set 23 mm broader and 134 mm lower than the Speed 400. Likewise, the footpegs are 86 mm further back and 27 mm higher to justify the name. This is topped by a 31.7-inch saddle height, 0.6 up from the Speed.

A Simple Suspension Setup Is Present On Both New Triumph 400s

What about the underpinnings, you ask? Well, not much has changed in this aspect. You get 43 mm USD forks and a monoshock, coupled to a steel tubular perimeter chassis. 17-inch wheels are present on both bikes, with the same single disc brake setup as the existing Triumph 400s. Expect less braking power here, though, considering both the Thruxton (388 pounds) and Tracker (381 pounds) are heavier than the Speed (374 pounds).
