Tiffany & Co. has taken its Bird on a Rock beyond the brooch.
For the first time, the storied jeweler has made its famed design available in a fine-jewelry collection, alongside a slew of new high-jewelry offerings. The new collections reimagine the classic Bird on a Rock motif, brought to life by Jean Schlumberger in 1965, and takes its design cues from a bird’s wing, as well as the layered look of a bird’s plumage, to create graceful, sculptural pieces dripping in diamonds and other gemstones.
Turquoise, one of those dazzling gems, is the focus of one of Tiffany’s new high-jewelry suites in a nod to Schlumberger, who often found unique ways to make the stone stand out. Here, the pièce de résistance is a stunning statement necklace, complete with a diamond bird, a strand of cabochon turquoise, gold and diamond feathers, and a cabochon turquoise drop. The gem is also featured in a pendant, a brooch, and a ring. Tanzanite, the sparkler in the other high-jewelry suite, can be seen in a necklace, a bracelet, and earrings.
In this collection, it’s all about the birds.

As for the fine-jewelry line, it takes inspiration from nature itself, in all its glory. The layered effect here is strong, with bird wings overlapping each other on various pieces; the animals also appear in pairs or alone throughout the collection. One offering, Bird on a Rock by Tiffany Wings, shows off diamonds with hidden settings, making them appear as though they’re suspended in midair. A pair of convertible earrings can be switched from drop earrings to studs, creating four different looks to go with any mood. And one piece with scalloped edges can fit perfectly against the feather-shaped silhouette of another, making the perfect pair.
“For the high jewelry Bird on a Rock designs, we studied birds as Jean Schlumberger did—carefully observing their stances, their feathers, the structures of their wings—to create dynamic forms that seem to flutter and perch upon the wearer,” Nathalie Verdeille, Tiffany’s chief artistic officer, said in a statement. “For the fine jewelry collection, we looked at this bird from another perspective, distilling it down to its essence—the wing—and stylizing the motif into elegant, abstract patterns. These sculptural forms intertwine and unfold in textural creations that are as abstract as they are symbolic.”
